
Horton Plains: A Hiker's Paradise
Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, covering an area of 3,160 hectares. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes.
World's End
The most famous feature of Horton Plains is World's End, a sheer cliff with a drop of about 870 meters. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The best time to visit is early morning when the mist clears and reveals the breathtaking views.
Hiking Trails
The park offers several well-marked hiking trails that take you through cloud forests, grasslands, and waterfalls. The main circular trail is about 9.5 kilometers and takes 3-4 hours to complete. Remember to bring water and wear comfortable walking shoes.
Wildlife
Horton Plains is home to various species of mammals, birds, and reptiles. You might spot sambar deer, purple-faced langur monkeys, and numerous bird species. The park is also famous for its endemic plants and orchids.
